A camel is a large, even-toed ungulate with two humps and a long, curved neck, and it is one of the largest animals that can be domesticated. There are two main types of camels: dromedaries and Bactrian camels. Dromedaries have one hump and Bactrian camals have two humps. These camels are found in deserts all over the world but are especially common in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

Camels produce a variety of noises, but the two most common are the generic sound they make when they are inconvenienced, harassed by another camel or a human, or frequently made when they are forced to stand from a kneeling (crushed) position unwillingly.
A camel’s throat is more flexible than that of other mammals. This helps camels to produce the loud, resonant sounds they use to communicate. Camels bray and hum by expanding the soft tissues in their throats and pushing air out through the nose or mouth.
Camel hums vary in pitch depending on how hard they are blowing. They range from low-pitched, flatly resonant tones to high-pitched, squeaky sounds. Each type has its own purpose: some serve as alarm signals; others help camels keep track of each other; and still others signal dominance and submission.
